Choosing a church to attend can be challenging, especially when coming to town for the first time. As a college student, it’s easy to find yourself sleeping in on Sunday mornings avoiding the uneasy feeling of entering an unfamiliar place of worship. If you can relate to the intimidating circumstance just described, let me give you some peace. Greenville, IL is home to Greenville University and a plentiful variety of churches. Therefore, there’s a place for everyone to call home. Or, you can bounce around and enjoy them all! Smith Grove was planted in 1869 out of a need for a church in the Stubblefield area. Today, their motto is, “We are glorifying God through growing disciples and serving those around us.” Matt Mendenhall is the lead pastor. Their address is 949 Airport Ave which is about 9 minutes from campus. Services are currently cancelled due to COVID-19, but you can watch all the sermons online. Normally, their first worship service is held at 8:15 AM followed by Sunday school at 9:30 AM and second service at 10:30 AM.
The goal of the FM church is to help produce fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ who embrace truth, enter freedom, and experience transformation and then extend truth, freedom and transformation to a needy world. Their doors open back up for in-person worship on June 14th with a 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM service. Don’t worry, you can still Facebook live stream the 11 o’clock service. Plugging 1367 IL Route 140 into your GPS will lead you to this house of worship led by Pastor Deb Somerville.
The mission of Our Redeemer is to vigorously make known the love of Christ by word and deed within our church, our community, and the world. Coming from Greenville on Route 140, Our Redeemer is on the right hand side of the road just before you reach the FM church. You can access services online or attend in-person outside under the pavilion. Usually, they host Saturday night worship at 5:30 PM and Sunday morning at 10:15 AM right after Sunday school at 9:30 AM.
The First Presbyterian Church in Greenville is located on 501 N. Idler Lane and is led by Reverend Kurt Simon. During the pandemic, you can access sermons on their website linked above, or live at 10:00 AM on their Facebook page. Typical Sunday morning worship is held at 10:45 AM and bible study is held every Thursday at noon.
Established in 1878, GFCC is a nondenominational church and welcomes all believers and seekers. Currently, GFCC hosts services online every Sunday at 9:30 AM, on-site at 8:00 with strict social distancing requirements and at 9:30 and 11:00 AM with standard restrictions, and on the radio at 10:30 on 89.5 and 11:00 AM on 101.7.
Conveniently on College Avenue about a 5 minute walk from campus, St. Paul’s is marked by communal prayer, scripture reading, and Communion. They welcome people from all walks of life to become friends of God, each other, and God’s world. Without COVID, they host morning prayer Monday through Friday at 7:30 AM and Sunday morning worship at 11:00 AM. With COVID, they go live every Sunday at 11:00 AM on their Facebook page.
The First Baptist Church in Greenville is a family of believers who value worship and community. They want to provide opportunities for you to connect and build lasting relationships from meaningful worship to connecting in Bible study and fellowship activities. St. Lawrence Church began in 1859 as a mission church of Mother of Dolors in Vandalia. It wasn’t until 1878 that the first church in Greenville was built. There is about 275 families attending St. Lawrence and they invite all to join their church family. It’s located at 512 S. Prairie St. and is led by Rev. Alan M. Hunter. Services are normally held at 5:30 PM on Saturday evening and at 8:00 and 10:00 AM on Sunday morning. During COVIS, masses are accessible on their YouTube and Facebook.

Bibleway House of Prayer
This one is a bit out of the way located on highway 40 near Mulberry Grove, IL, however, it’s worth the drive. They have welcomed GU students into their place of worship with open arms. Normally. Sunday school is at 9:30 AM with worship beginning at 10:45. They also have Bible study Wednesday nights at 7:00. Check their Facebook for updates and videos of sermons and worship.
Led by Senior Pastor Reverend Curtis Flake, the First United Methodist Church is founded on six core values: belonging, disciple making, praying, reaching, serving, and worshiping. They are located at 310 S 2nd Street and you can access online services on their Facebook. Typical Sunday Mornings have first service at 8:30 AM, Sunday school at 9:30, and second service at 10:30.
Located on Route 40 and led by George and Michelle Bankston. The First Apostolic Church of Greenville began in Mulberry Grove, IL in the mid 1980's. They are a community of real people, with the same mission - to grow toward an authentic and abundant life in Jesus Christ. An adult Bible study, teen and Sunday school is held every Sunday morning at 10:00 AM followed by service at 11:00. They also have Thursday evening worship at 7:30 PM.
